Taste test: hot sauce

|

hot sauce
With a lot of talk about hot sauce, we had to taste test all popular varieties of ourselves. We got our mouths opened to this test taste spicy. Find out who topped our list.

All about sodium
The new sauce is hot sauce. DAB a little white sandwiches – almost any dish, grilled meats, pizza, pasta dishes, chili. If you can check the label, you will notice that there is a lot of information on each service nutrition – not the calories, fat, saturated fat, carbohydrates, or protein (or at least a bit it can be listed as zero food labelling guideline). What is sodium – and some brands have more than others.

Standards
This taste test, we rated hot sauce based on taste and spiciness, ingredients and nutrition information — specifically from sodium. We chose the original flavor of each brand and rated them on a 5-point scale (5 being the highest). Since usually eaten with hot sauce, we tasted each tortilla chip.

Although many people yelled out sriracha on Facebook and Twitter, we chose to stick to the traditional varieties of this taste test.

Cholula hot sauce
Rating: 5.0
Cost: $ 0.45 per ounce liquid
Nutrition information (per teaspoon): 0 calories; 28 mg sodium
Our take: imported from Mexico, this is the only brand that contains the spoon as a serving size (1 teaspoon of others). Very mild pepper flavor, especially compared to some of the other brands; it may be because the first item listed is water (then Arbol pepper Beijing).

Tabasco pepper sauce
Rating: 4.0
Cost: $ 1.18 per ounce liquid
Nutrition information (per teaspoon): 0 calories; 35 mg sodium
Our take: a lot of us grew up using a small red bottle and boy it's still hot as we remember this. This child has only 3 ingredients: distilled vinegar, paprika and salt. Along with Cholula, less sodium content but it was much more expensive.

The original Frank's red hot
Rating: 4.0
Cost: $ 0.31 per ounce liquid
Nutrition information (per teaspoon): 0 calories; 190 mg sodium
Our take: we love the innocent woman (after filthy mouth) on "red hot sauce" Frank commercials (see their website if you haven't seen them). Components in this one is very simple-cayenne pepper, vinegar distilled powder, water, salt and garlic. Flavored just right — not too hot but not mild either and it's cheaper than a bouquet. Sodium, however, one of the highest of all brands tested.

Texas Pete hot sauce
Rating: 4.0
Cost: $ 0.18 per ounce liquid
Nutrition information (per teaspoon): 0 calories; 100 mg sodium
Our take: Whoa, Nelly! This hot sauce to kick that you feel beautiful again after it hits your mouth. Sodium is smack in the middle of all the samples we've tested, and include a few extras such as gum ingredients buzzes and benzoate of soda (to maintain freshness and flavor).

Louisiana hot sauce
Rating: 3.5
Cost: $ 0.37 per ounce liquid
Nutrition information (per teaspoon): 0 calories; 240 mg sodium
Our take: this "hot" sauce was actually on the side of sweetness and the sauce itself has a thicker consistency. Simple item list: peppers, vinegar, salt, but sodium is much higher than other brands tested.
